Are you out of your mind? There’s cameras and microphones and tape recorders and guys in polo shirts and suits around him. The reporters know Syracuse head coach Gerry McNamara said something to Mark Morano when he passed up that open triple, but they don’t need to know exactly what he said. That stays between McNamara, Morano and whoever else was in earshot. “I don’t think so,” Morano said, chuckling after he was asked to repeat what McNamara said to him. “I don’t think that’s good. I’m not gonna say it.”Shucks. Well, there’s plenty of other people in Syracuse’s locker room who must’ve heard it. Amarri Monroe’s one of them. The forward’s sitting there, hoodie on and diamond-encrusted necklace around his neck, just waiting for someone to ask him. Here goes nothing.“He literally said, ‘You’re in the game to f—ing shoot,’” Monroe said upon being asked to recall what his coach told Morano after he passed up the open look.In all fairness to McNamara, he’s correct. Morano was in the game to shoot, and Gavin Doty was, too. The two Syracuse guards combined for seven triples on Thursday. With Morano’s 16 points and Doty’s 18, the two led SU in scoring. On a night when Syracuse (2-0, Atlantic Coast) shot 64.4% from the field, they were the biggest beneficiaries of its high-octane offense in its 102-49 victory over Central Connecticut State (0-2, Northeast). “It blows the game open,” Doty said, referring to his and Morano’s shooting ability.Believe it. Somewhere in that second half, there’s a 49-second stretch that proves it. Thirteen minutes, 37 seconds remain in the game. For all intents and purposes, it’s over by now — Syracuse is up 60-28 — but don’t tell McNamara. He wants his team to play 40 minutes of basketball, so they’re playing 40 minutes of basketball. The ball gets inbounded to Garwey Dual. The point guard passes it to Sadiq White Jr. on the perimeter, who kicks it to Doty. He dribbles around for a little before passing it to Morano. The Slovenian has space, but he doesn’t like the look, so he kicks it back to Dual to reset the play. Dual drives into the paint, but he can’t get his layup off, so he tosses a prayer back to Doty, hoping the 6-foot-5, 200-pound guard can make something out of a possession that should lead to absolutely nothing.

Four seconds on the shot clock. Alright, to hell with dribbling. Just let it rip.“Threeeeee,” the JMA Wireless Dome public address system blares, reacting to a deep Doty triple that pushed Syracuse’s advantage to 63-28. Central Connecticut State gets the ball and pushes up the court but ultimately airballs into Dual’s lap. The show must go on. Twelve minutes, 59 seconds left. Dual dribbles up the court in transition and kicks to Morano on the perimeter. He’s expecting a 3. He’s not looking at the teammate he just delivered the ball to. Instead, he’s pantomiming a shot as Morano takes a jab step and drives into the paint. It wasn’t the right look, just as he felt it wasn’t the right look when McNamara let him know the other shot was, in fact, the right look. He’ll know when he finds the right look. “I’m just taking whatever shots the game gives me,” Morano said postgame. The game’s about to give him another one. But first, he drives into the paint and tosses it back to Dual. Another reset. Morano turns, sees some space in the corner and moves into it as the Blue Devils part from him like the Red Sea. Dual tosses it back to him on a bounce, and Morano steps to his right to gather the ball. He’s off-balance, mere inches from the sideline, and yet none of that matters right now. All that matters is the ball, and the net Morano’s about to put it in to make it 66-28. “He didn’t quite have his feet set on the last one he hit in the corner,” McNamara said postgame. “But I think I yelled at him so much from the previous play, that he had to take it.”That stretch, more than any other, encapsulates the freedom Doty and Morano played with from the perimeter Thursday. Doty said it’s a lot of fun when he and Morano are firing on all cylinders. He calls him his “Slovenian brother.” They feed off each other’s energy. “Once we make shots, it just opens the game up for us,” Doty said. Morano concurs. He says that when one of them heats up, it gets the whole team going, and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. They start playing for each other, the kind of unselfish basketball McNamara believes led to this 53-point bloodbath.“Whenever somebody’s on fire, it gives us all energy,” Morano said. That’s why McNamara told Morano he’s there to “f—ing shoot.” He didn’t intend to downplay the other things he does well on the court, but it’s important to him to maximize his players’ strengths. It’s important for them to realize why they’re in the game. Morano understands why he’s in the game. “Every time when I pass up an open shot, (McNamara) gets really mad,” Morano said. “It gives me a little more of a confidence boost.”Published on November 5, 2026 at 11:31 pmContact Mauricio: [email protected] | @PointPalmar
