The study used grant money from Lee County and identified high-risk areas. It found 17% of local roads, most west of Broadway Avenue, could face storm surge of up to nine feet in a 100-year event.A '100-year event' is a statistical term describing an event, such as a major storm, flood or rainfall, that has a 1% chance of occurring or being exceeded in any given year.The April 2026 assessment evaluated storm surge, tidal flooding, compound flooding, rainfall-induced flooding, wildfire, heat, wind and drought. It examined current conditions along with projections for 2050 and 2080."Together, the Exposure and Sensitivity Analyses indicate that the Village does not face widespread flood risk and rather has localized vulnerabilities and demonstrates strong baseline resilience," the assessment said.David Willems, the Village of Estero's public works director, presented the Village Council with highlights from the study during their regular Oct. 28 meeting."We're set pretty well compared to most of the communities throughout Florida. It said heavy rainfall and extreme storm events posed greater concerns than tidal flooding.Residents on Broadway Avenue West said they had seen catastrophic flooding from the Estero River during Hurricane Ian. "The Estero River is right here ..." Christopher Baxter, an Estero neighbor, said. "Obviously you're going to get more iffy.""I walk around a lot of these few trails and parks in that direction, and they are swampy just on a regular rainy day, so I can only imagine what they would be like during a really big storm," Baxter said.The assessment identified localized risks to infrastructure, including lift stations, roads, bridges, wastewater facilities and shorelines near the Estero River and Halfway Creek. It also found critical community and emergency facilities, including government buildings, schools and fire stations, showed low to no sensitivity across the evaluated scenarios.The village said it completed the study in part to create a baseline for future grant applications and to work on plans that address the concerns it found.
