Crews are using the remaining days to finish work, including a final layer of asphalt on Concord Avenue.</p><h2>Remaining projects</h2><p>Public works also has leaf pickup to finish. The last leaf pickup routes take a crew of four to six people. That leaves two people to take care of the rest of Weston.</p><p>Public Works Director Michael Wodalski said October was the month to finish anything “mission critical.” The remaining work is odds and ends that crews would rather finish now than when temperatures are below freezing.</p><h2>Winter preparation</h2><p>Crews will get plow and salt trucks ready. Before the first snowfall, drivers may see road crews driving along plow routes to check for anything sticking out that could be a problem if a plow were to clip it.</p><h2>Potholes and freezing rain</h2><p>Filling potholes adds one task to plowing and salting Weston’s roadways.</p><p>“As soon as winter hits and it gets some moisture and it maybe freezes, that water starts expanding inside there,” Wodalski said. “It pops out the fix you had and you’re just consistently filling it.”</p><p>“You can fill a pothole at 8 a.m. and at 10 a.m. be back out there filling the same holes,” he said.</p><p>Wodalski said freezing rain is worse than snow.</p><p>“We’d rather it just be super cold or be warm enough that things can melt,” he said. “But when it’s right at that freezing temperature and it’s consistent, that gets really tough.”</p><h2>Salt use</h2><p>Weston has cut its salt use almost in half after training from the organization Wisconsin Salt Wise. Crews are using 4.68 tons of salt per mile.</p><p>“We used to use almost 3,000 tons of salt a year. We’re down to about 1,400 to 1,500 tons,” Wodalski said. “By using that much less salt, we’re saving about $100,000 in taxpayer dollars.”</p></div></body>
