The program, now in its 10th year, runs from June to November. The program is designed to help students operate mechanized logging equipment, identify commercial wood, and prepare contract work in the logging industry. “We’re going to be half a million-dollar machines all the time. Being able to understand what you’re going to do with them all the time and when you go into the real workforce. You help keep contractors going,” said graduate Jackson Newton. Throughout the course, students trained on nearly $5 million worth of forestry equipment loaned by regional equipment dealers, helping prepare students in managing both old and state-of-the-art machinery for contract workers. “People who want to hop in one of these machines, you can’t do. Like people just don’t want. some random person running their multi-million dollar or half a million-dollar machine with no experience,” said graduate Samuel Armstrong. Instructors say that generous support gives young operators invaluable seat time in modern machinery before entering the workforce.“We love to see them come in the first day, not really sure about what they were doing and what they know. Some of them didn’t know the difference between hardwood and softwood. We’ve taken them from there to merchandising some of the big money wood,” said Program Coordinator Donald Burr. Graduates are now preparing to take their commercial driver’s license (CDL) exams before beginning full-time jobs with logging contractors across the state.“I bet when we get into the real world it’ll be a lot more different, a lot faster pace,” said Newton, “I’ve learned a lot and I’m ready.” </div></body>
