Photo from OMRF</figcaption></figure>Oklahoma needs more businesses that give our graduates a reason to build their careers here. Some could grow from discoveries at our universities. We should make it easier for researchers to turn promising ideas into Oklahoma companies. Our new OK Competes: Tech Edition report shows the urgency. Prepared by Economic Leadership for the Oklahoma Technology Alliance, it found that technology industry employment grew 2.3% in Oklahoma from 2020 to 2025, compared with 10.1% nationally. Oklahoma Competes is our effort to close those gaps. Strong schools, reliable infrastructure, and a competitive business climate all matter. So does our ability to turn research into products customers will buy and businesses that hire. Technology transfer helps university discoveries reach the marketplace, either through an existing company or a new business. The report’s stakeholder interviews suggest that the process needs attention. Participants described it as too controlling and bureaucratic, at times a “nightmare.” University leaders should take that feedback seriously. At the report’s release, University of Oklahoma research leader Matthew Hulver described efforts to simplify agreements, publish terms, and coordinate support for entrepreneurs. As he put it, “The patent is not a company.” Someone still has to determine whether customers need an invention, develop a product, secure financing, and run a business. Faculty members and students deserve support with those steps. Universities should publish clear starting terms for licensing and inventor compensation, set reasonable decision timelines, and identify someone responsible for moving agreements forward. Researchers should understand the process and their potential rewards before committing months of work. Business partners also need predictable terms so they can assess the risks, raise capital, and decide whether to invest in an Oklahoma project. Technology transfer offices should actively connect inventors with customers, experienced entrepreneurs, and investors. Those relationships can help identify a market and give promising companies a better chance to succeed. Universities must protect intellectual property and the public investment behind it. Clear agreements and consistent oversight can meet that responsibility while allowing promising work to advance. We should expect both. Other states offer useful funding models. Arkansas provides technology transfer grants that help businesses access technical expertise, including at universities. New Mexico has used small grants to help companies license technologies from universities and federal laboratories. Oklahoma should evaluate targeted grants that help test a prototype, determine customer demand, or complete work needed to attract private investment. Awards should have clear milestones. Results should include businesses using the technology, follow-on investment, and jobs created here. Employers have responsibilities, too. We need to explain the problems we are trying to solve and help test potential solutions. Through the Oklahoma Technology Alliance, we are bringing businesses and research organizations together across the state. Those connections should lead to practical partnerships. University leaders and lawmakers should make technology transfer reform part of Oklahoma’s competitiveness agenda. Researchers need clear terms and timely decisions. Entrepreneurs need practical help connecting promising ideas with customers and capital. If we get those pieces right, more discoveries made here can become Oklahoma companies, create jobs, and give our graduates another reason to build their careers here. </div></body>
