Courtesy of Pentatonix</figcaption></figure>A-cappella group Pentatonix is bringing its signature vocal arrangements to the Montana State University Brick Breeden Fieldhouse in Bozeman on Nov. 9.The Grammy-winning group has six members: soprano singer Kirstin Maldonado, bass singer Avi Kaplan, baritone singer Scott Hoying, tenor singer Mitch Grassi, singing drummer Matt Sallee and singing beatboxer and cello player Kevin Olusola. The Chronicle talked with Olusola ahead of Pentatonix’ Bozeman visit, part of the group’s 2026 Christmas in the City Tour, the latest installment of its annual, frequently sold-out holiday performances. This particular tour follows the release of Penatonix' latest holiday cover of “Get Happy/Happy Days Are Here Again.”Olusola described his cello performance combined with Grassi’s drums as if the “Trans-Siberian Orchestra teleported to a (vocal) concert.”“I’m playing the cello like it’s Jimi Hendrix, Matt’s just rocking out on the drums,” Olusola said. “What you thought about us, you gotta think again — we’re bringing something completely new to the table.”It’s not Olusola’s first visit to the area. He gave a 2019 wedding performance at the Yellowstone Club for his friend James Murphy, co-founder and CEO of LMNT, a popular zero-sugar electrolyte drink brand.“I have fond memories there,” Olusola said. “I hope we get some time to explore. It was a real true decision to come to places like... Bozeman and bring our joy there. We want to bring it to as many parts of the country that will have us.”The Christmas in the City Tour is “thea-ter, thea-ter, the-ter,” said Olusola, donning a posh British accent to illustrate the top-tier “Christmas magic” of the the 1940s and 1950s in store for audiences.“I hope people really enjoy that,” Olusola said. “The costumes that we’re wearing, the clothes, the sets that we have. The classics that you love, ‘Hallelujah,' ‘Mary, Did You Know?', those things that have always been a staple in our Christmas music.”For Olusola, there’s something special about the old-school holiday tunes that never loses luster. He invoked adding new Pentatonix vocal arrangements to a never-previously-released recording of “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm” from legend Frank Sinatra that topped the Christmas charts in 2025. The recording also hit number one on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart last season.“It was just so cool to collaborate with a legend and continue his legacy,” Olusola said, indicating the song sans-Sinatra is on the setlist for the Bozeman performance. The Chronicle asked Olusola if any aspects of the Pentatonix Bozeman performance are improvised or merely appear that way.“I’ll improvise a beatbox solo or a lick here and there,” Olusola said. “It’s so cool whenever my bandmates get to see it; they’re like, ‘Oh — I didn’t expect that.”Olusola described a Pentatonix performance aspect called “the dice game.” Dice is rolled on stage corresponding to a different song and genre, determining the style of the rendition.“It could be like blues, but the song ‘Let it Snow,’” Olusola said. “Or it may be Broadway (style), and we’re singing “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.’People go: ‘I don’t know how this is gonna go live.' We... don’t know either. That’s where the fun, the magic, the joy and the hilarity stems from. Check this: There’s no backing tracks, there’s no instrumentals — so when things go flat, things go sharp or we’re out of tune, you’re gonna hear it. That's the beauty of the vulnerability I think we bring as a group.”For Olusola, it’s all about having a good time.“People will see something real,” he said. “Bring your grandma, bring your grandkid, it’s an experience for the whole family.”</div></body>
