It’s the focus of this week’s Throwback Thursday with Brian Bouchard. There’s an old saying that you’re never too old to learn something new, and Bessie Higgins was living proof of that. In this week’s Throwback Thursday, we dial the time machine back to 1987 where WAGM reporter Joe Prescott met Higgins, who was still taking art classes at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. This is Bessie Higgins. At 90 years old, she is by far the senior student in this art class at the University of Maine in Presque Isle. She’s lived and worked in Aroostook County since 1928 and during that time has become well known for her paintings. When not taking classes at the college, she still paints and sells her works. Bessie Higgins - Artist “Almost everybody that paints at all likes to sell. If you don’t like to sell, you don’t paint. I really think that’s true because It was something about having them and then selling them to somebody who likes them.” While she considers painting her real talent, she enjoys being involved in all forms of art and being around other artists. Bessie Higgins - Artist “Painting is more my forte than sculpture, let us say. When I had a chance to come over, we lived. And it’s always nice to just see people.” Art instructor Cliff Budman has had the pleasure of having Bessie Higgins in many of his classes over the years and says she’s an inspiration to the students and to him. Cliff Budman – Art Instructor “She likes to be with young people. Well, it’s good for our soul and her soul as a person doing imagery. She’s just a joy to have in our classes and she’s been in so many of them that she’s just one of us here and she always has been.” Bessie Higgins will be 91 years old in January, and despite her age, she shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.</div></body>
