The town council announced they will enact the law to prevent youth nicotine addiction. Town council members who supported the ban said that it is in the town’s best interest to move forward with the ban. Once passed, the ordinance will include a 12-month implementation period in which stores must sell their inventory of the affected products before the ban takes full effect.San Anselmo Vice Mayor Chantel Walker took both sides of the proposition into consideration, recognising that local businesses that earn income from nicotine products could be negatively impacted. However, her decision was ultimately based on the future health and wellbeing of the town.“Limit access now as another tool, so that fewer youth start, and so fewer youth have easy access. Other things also need to be done, and we need to assess what young people are using. So I believe that this was the right step for San Anselmo right now, based on the data,” Chantel explained. “I also really believe in economic vibrancy, and so it was a challenging choice knowing that business flexibility was going to be needed.”On the contrary, some local businesses urged the council to reconsider the ban, explaining that the purchase of tobacco-based products by adults is voluntary, as they are the consumers and have full control over their decisions and the impact. In addition, they explained that nicotine products impact their bottom-line sales as a family-run business.A San Anselmo liquor store, Quick n Easy, has been open for over 20 years, and the owner’s son, Karan Gill, expressed his concerns about the ban at the town council meeting.“So, the town council is acting based on an illicit market by using people that are buying and selling items illegally, and then using that rule-breaking essentially to enforce it on the businesses that follow the laws and who are already under strict regulations for these products,” Gill explained. “I mean we’re going to lose a ton of customers that come in specifically for tobacco and nicotine products, and then as a side effect that’ll bleed into other products.”Quick n Easy questioned, along with other businesses, why these repercussions should be taken if they do follow the law and other businesses do not.Moving forward, the sales of these products will continue until supply is gone. After around 12 months, stores in San Anselmo will no longer sell nicotine products.</div></body>
