From the music room to British Literature and Life Skills support, four new educators are bringing fresh experiences, unique interests, and new perspectives to Lower Moreland.Every school year brings something new to the hallways of Lower Moreland: new classes, new experiences, and, of course, new faces. As students settle into their schedules, four new educators are doing the same. This year, the District welcomes Claire Bryan, Kelsey Hendler, Leah Wilson, and Serena Patterson, each bringing a different background and set of experiences to the community. Despite their different paths into education, all four have shared a similar first impression: Lower Moreland’s welcoming atmosphere and close-knit faculty.

For Claire Bryan, joining Lower Moreland has been an opportunity to grow professionally while becoming part of a supportive teaching community. As she enters only her second year of teaching, Bryan explained that the District has already helped her develop her skills as an educator. What stood out most to her was the camaraderie among faculty members and their willingness to support one another. She described the positive energy throughout the District as something that reflects the true essence of teaching: community. For a newer educator, having colleagues who are willing to share their experience and encouragement can make all the difference, and Bryan is excited to continue growing alongside the Lower Moreland faculty.

In the music department, Kelsey Hendler brings an especially interesting background to her work teaching choir and piano. Before returning to the classroom, Hendler spent eight years teaching and then worked for a sheet music company reviewing choral music. This experience gave her the opportunity to explore a wide range of music and develop new ideas for songs to introduce to her students.Hendler described her time at Lower Moreland as a great experience, particularly appreciating how welcoming everyone has been. Outside of music, her interests include reading, running, rock climbing, and walking her dogs. Her combination of classroom experience and professional work with choral music offers a unique perspective that students can look forward to experiencing in their music classes.

English teacher Leah Wilson also brings experiences from beyond the District. Before joining Lower Moreland, Wilson taught at an arts high school where students auditioned for specialized programs in theater, dance, and music while continuing their traditional academic studies. She particularly enjoyed the level of artistry and performance at the school. Her own educational experiences have also taken her overseas. While completing her master’s degree, Wilson lived in England as an international student, an experience that offered her an opportunity to immerse herself in another culture. Since arriving at Lower Moreland, she has especially enjoyed getting to know her students through British Literature and writing. Outside the classroom, she enjoys reading books and baking sweet treats.

For Serena Patterson, joining the District is actually something of a homecoming. Having previously worked at Lower Moreland as both a paraprofessional and student teacher, Patterson was already familiar with the community before returning in her current role. She explained that returning was an easy choice because of the District’s close-knit atmosphere, especially after previously teaching at a high school with approximately 2,200 students.Patterson is now teaching Life Skills support, a program she enthusiastically described as one of the coolest in the district. She is also the sponsor of Buddy Club, which meets on the last Wednesday of each month in Room 304 and offers students an opportunity to connect with one another.Outside of school, Patterson describes herself as a proud cat mom, an avid Target shopper, and an unapologetic fan of anything pumpkin-flavored. She also shared a particularly unique accomplishment: her master’s degree graduation photograph is displayed in the Student Center at Holy Family University’s Philadelphia campus.Although their backgrounds and experiences differ, Bryan, Hendler, Wilson, and Patterson each bring something distinct to Lower Moreland. From professional musical experience and international studies to returning to a familiar community, their individual stories add new perspectives to the District. As the school year continues, students will have plenty of opportunities to get to know these educators beyond their names on a class schedule. Whether through a new song in choir, an engaging literature discussion, or an opportunity to participate in Buddy Club, each teacher is already finding ways to contribute to the school community. After all, a school’s identity is shaped not only by its students, but also by the educators who make its classrooms feel like home.
