A $110,000 federal grant will fund a separate, accessible library entrance and an adjacent book return. Shannon Gunderson</figcaption></figure>MILTON — A new accessible entrance and relocated book return are planned for the Milton Public Library after the selectboard accepted a $110,000 grant Nov. 4.The project would give the library a separate entrance with automatic doors and move its book return from the back of the building to the front. Construction could be completed by fall 2027, depending on the time needed for a required federal environmental review, permitting and bidding. The federal funding comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development through the Vermont Department of Libraries’ Public Facilities Preservation Initiative Grants program.Alan Fletcher, president of the Friends of the Milton Public Library and the project’s grant administrator, told the board the environmental review must happen before the project can advance.“Before we can do anything, we have to go through that process,” Fletcher said. “Once that process is done, then we can start looking at bids for the project and putting together a better timeline for when it would happen.”The proposed work would create a foyer with an accessible double-door entrance and an adjacent book return. Fletcher said a separate entrance could help with evening library activities that currently require the building’s main doors to remain open. Reconfiguring the entrance could also free up wall space inside the library. The grant requires no local matching funds, although the town would be responsible for project costs exceeding the $110,000 award. Funding will reimburse eligible project expenses.Town Manager Chris Taylor clarified the town, rather than the Friends organization, is the grant recipient.“The Town of Milton is the grantee,” Taylor said. “So the award is to the Town of Milton.”Taylor said the library and the town’s buildings and grounds staff will be closely involved.“It’s going to be a very big collaboration to make sure everybody is on board with how this proceeds,” he said. The selectboard unanimously authorized the grant application in March. The initial construction estimate was $96,438, according to the project documents. The award announced in late October included additional money for expenses such as permitting and potential increases in material costs.Fletcher said fall 2027 is the tentative completion goal, but the schedule will depend on the review process. The grant requires completion by Oct. 2, 2028.“The goal, the hope, would be that we could potentially get this done by next fall, but we’ll have to see how long it takes to go through the process to get there,” Fletcher said.</div></body>
