Democrat Kimberly Fisher, 38, of Detroit, won the District 11 state House seat over Republican Matthew Stafford.

Kimberly Fisher

“We talked about knowing what time it was, and listen, you guys not only showed up, but you slam dunked,” Fisher said in a video statement posted to her social media accounts.A small business owner who’s lived in Detroit for 37 years, Fisher never held a public office, according to information previously submitted to C&G Newspapers. As shared for the paper’s voter guide published in August, Fisher’s top goals include improving public safety, expanding reliable public transit, addressing environmental justice and lowering the cost of living for working families. In her statement, she thanked supporters. “I have nothing but extreme gratitude not only for those who live in the 11th House District, but for Team Fisher,” she said. Fisher won with just under 73% of the vote over 36-year-old Stafford, of Warren. According to election results provided by Macomb County, she received 8,653 votes there. Stafford received 3,145, or 26.53%, and unofficial write-ins received 58 votes. In Wayne County, Fisher won by a commanding 15,173 votes (95.72%) over Stafford’s 612 votes (3.86%). There were 67 write-in votes there. Like Fisher, Stafford has also never held an elected office before. “Although yesterday’s results were disappointing and not what we were expecting, I am truly blessed and honored to have gone through this experience,” Stafford said in a text message. “This campaign season may be coming to a close but our fight for working class families will go on, because the people of Michigan deserve it.” He added that Michigan Republicans need to regroup and refocus on the key issues that drove voters away. “Moving forward, we will be stronger together,” he said. Fisher will serve a two-year term with an annual salary of $71,685. Call Staff Writer Brian Wells at (248) 291-7637.
