It was the first time the Lancers had been represented at the state meet since 2019, when Bryson Simpson ran.Lindley’s leadership made the team want more. The second through seventh runners lowered their times all season, and optimism was high entering the Boardman Regional.Their work resulted in a fourth-place finish and the Lancer’s first team advancement since 2018.Lindley led the way with his 11th place finish, and Evan Sammut pushed to 38th in 17 minutes, 05.3 seconds, shaving over a minute off of his time from a season ago and helping Gilmour contend for the regional runner-up trophy.“This team is just so strong together,” Sammut said. “We’re all friends in school, we hang out with each other all the time. Other students can always pick us out. People might not see what we do or appreciate the work that we have to do to race on Saturdays. We come out, we do what we do and we have a fun time doing it.”The middle and back end of the group for the Lancers ran together and made a break down the stretch. Carter Shininger and Kevin Shank pushed into the 17:30s for their results while Ryan Moore broke 18 for the first time to round out the scoring group.Boardman has two hills at the start but is flat for most of the rest of the course.Through the season, Gilmour mixed challenging courses with flat, fast courses to prepare for the regional meet. Even falling behind Edgewood and Garrettsville at the district meet didn’t deter the team’s expectations going into the regional meet.“We create a winning atmosphere,” Shininger said. “What we do on this team, we uplift each other, we support each other through everything. We’re always working out together, eat together, we do all this stuff together. And it’s not about how fast we are or whatever. How we work together, the spirits are so high, and I’m just so glad to be a part of this team and get to work with these guys.”The Lancers will also have a strong core coming back for next season. Sammut, Shininger and Shank all return for their senior seasons and will be tasked with taking the next steps for the program.Several sophomores and freshmen also improved through the year and will be put into the lineup next season. But right now, the focus is on Obetz and continuing to build the strong foundation.Lindley aims to be the team’s first All-Ohio runner since John Brett in 2013. He currently holds the school’s third-fastest time with a 16:18.2, only trailing Bart Merkel (15:56.1) and Cyril Pinchak (16:15.0). The course at Obetz provides a chance for him to go after the record. The rest of the team is focusing on posting the best result possible and launching into the subsequent seasons.“Evan does really open the door for us,” Sammut said. “You see teams out there that have top guys that help push the rest of the team. The Garrettsville’s and Woodridge’s. They have that really nice pack. I feel like just the back half of our team really brings us together as a whole and makes us as strong as we are.”Shininger added: “Evan’s a great leader, but he’s just as good of a supporter. He’s an inspiration for every single one of us. But you have people like Ryan and Carson (Moore) that are holding up the caboose, and that’s the most important part right there, tightening it up. Obviously, you can have a strong two, but what’s happening in the back is just as important.”The team takes the line at Obetz at 2:20 p.m. on Nov. 7.</div></body>
