(WHNT) — The headlines from election night sound familiar: Republicans swept state offices and North Alabama reelected its members of Congress. But a closer look shows signs of some major changes in the political landscape in Madison County.Among the developments that stood out, two well-financed, two-term incumbents, Alabama Sen. Sam Givhan and Madison County Sheriff Kevin Turner, both lost their reelection bids. And there was a huge uptick in Democrats casting votes in Madison County. The two developments are connected. Countywide Republicans were largely outperformed by Democrats, but depending on the office, that meant defeat or the winning margin came from other parts of the district.Alabama Gov.-elect Tommy Tuberville and 5th District U.S. Rep. Dale Strong won their races Tuesday. Tuberville defeated Doug Jones, and Strong outpaced political newcomer Andrew Sneed, but both Republicans lost in Madison County. Jones beat Tuberville by more than 25,000 votes in Madison County. Strong won a third term in Congress despite losing his home county by 17,000 votes.Strong's performance also illustrates just how much the political map in Madison County has changed.Strong got nearly 70,000 votes in Madison County in his 2022 victory. That was good for 58 percent of the vote in Madison County. Tuesday he did even better, with more than 71,000 votes in Madison County, but that was only 44 percent of the votes cast here in his race. The big difference can be seen in the changes to the straight ticket voting totals. In 2022, the last midterm election, Republicans in Madison County cast 46,177 straight ticket votes, while 25,512 Democrats voted straight ticket.Tuesday, 47,738 GOP straight-ticket votes were cast, a figure up slightly from 2022. But the Democrat straight-ticket voting saw a huge increase from 2022, with 54,034 votes, more than double the 2022 figure. That major upswing appeared to make the difference in both Givhan's Alabama Senate District 7 race and for Turner, in the Madison County Sheriff's race. Both Givhan and Turner actually got more votes in 2026 than they did in winning in 2022. Givhan's total went from 29,095 to 29,678, records show. But his opponent, Democrat Jared Sluss, got 30,255 votes.Turner also did better Tuesday than he did in 2022, with 72,058 votes four years ago, compared with 74,639 Tuesday. But Democrat Brett Jones received 84,068 votes to win that election. Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
