(WFIE) – A Powderly City Council race ended in a tie between an uncle and his nephew. The uncle then stepped aside.Patrick Tucker and his uncle, Ronnie McIntosh, each received 68 votes in Tuesday’s election. That left them tied for the fourth and final seat on the council, according to unofficial results.Tucker said McIntosh called him as the results came in Tuesday night.“My uncle and I both ran for office. We have been discussing it quite a bit, family functions, things of that nature. And when the results started coming in last night, he actually called me and said, it looks like me and you have tied for the fourth seat.”
Concession instead of a coin flip
In Kentucky, ties in elections are normally decided by a coin flip. This race went a different way. McIntosh decided to concede to his nephew. The Muhlenberg County clerk’s office confirmed the concession to 14 News.“Kind of surprised... He and I both really want to improve the community and do the things that it takes. But after some discussion, we just determined that I think I have better time to put into it right now.”
Plans for Powderly
Tucker works at a hospital in Owensboro. He said he wants to bring that experience and workplace culture to city government. He said his uncle has given him full support. Tucker also said he has big plans for the city.“I want to make sure that we’re being completely transparent about everything. I want to bring more businesses to Powderly if we have the ability to do that and just improve the general appearance of the city, things of that nature.”Tucker will be sworn in Jan. 1, less than two months from now.
Powderly City Council results:
Voters could pick up to four candidates.CandidateVotesPercentMarilyn Peveler10919.3%Gary Gates9917.6%Brenda Keplinger9016%Patrick Tucker6812.1%Ronnie McIntosh6812.1%Lindsey Ewing6611.7%Tina Lear6411.3%
Other Election Results:
There were many other races with notable results. You can view those results here.
