Ballots were sent to students through their student email at midnight Tuesday, and closed at 4 p.m.Homecoming King CandidatesThe five candidates for Homecoming King candidates were Isaiah Garrett, Thomas Green, Nic Butler, Caden Turner, and Brayan Ordonez. Turner, a freshman exercise science and wellness major from Jacksonville, said the win was nerve-wracking but exciting. Turner said he is on the cymbal line in the Marching Southerners and hopes to represent the band well if he wins Homecoming King on Thursday.”“As a Marching Southerner, I hope I represent you guys well, and also as a freshman,” Turner said.As a freshman, Turner said his time at Jax State has been a blessing.“It has been a blessing to grow up here and to see it from the outside is one thing, but to enroll and to be a student at Jax State is another,” Turner said. “It’s such a humbling, blessing event to see the love of Jax State and what it offers.”Ordonez, a sophomore from Gadsden majoring in applied manufacturing engineering, said he gave a lot of his credit to his fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon, as well as the Marching Southerners, as he is on the saxophone line for voting for him. He said he was honored and blessed to be chosen for Homecoming Court.“I never thought about running for Homecoming Court because I have never done it in high school, so I decided ‘You know what? I’m gonna make my sophomore year special and give it all I can,” Ordonez said. Ordonez said he gives a lot of gratitude to the Jacksonville community, because he loves the community.“The beauty behind this community is that you get to meet different people from different backgrounds, and you get to see them come together - academically, socially, and personally. That’s the beauty to me,” Ordonez said.Thomas Green, a senior majoring in forensic investigations from Newnan, Georgia, said his time as Jax State Ambassador and a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Student Senate, and the Baptist Campus Ministries, has helped him get comfortable talking with students to help his campaign. Green said he is looking forward to seeing everyone being involved and voting in the election.Green said he wants students to know he is grateful for the opportunity, and he believes Jax State is the friendliest campus in the south. Green said coming to Jax State and not knowing anyone, and receiving 700 votes for Homecoming Court was more people than he thought he could have an impact on.“When I came here, I didn’t know anyone because I am from out of state,” Green said. “I think it just kind of shows that when they said Jax State is ‘The Friendliest Campus in the South,’ it truly is.”Nic Butler, a junior business management major from Cedartown, Georgia, said he was glad he got the opportunity to represent the school. As a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and as a Gamecock Orientation leader, Butler said being involved has helped him grow in terms of leadership roles, making new friendships, and receiving opportunities he never would have had.For his campaign, Butler said he tried to tell people about how much Jax State means to him.“I would have never thought I would have the opportunity to run for something like this,” Butler said. “Having a chance to be in the top five is crazy for me to think about.”Isaiah Garrett, a freshman majoring in hospitality and culinary art management from Jacksonville, said he loves homecoming and is looking forward to the festivities. Garrett said if he wins Homecoming King, he would want to use this title to promote more opportunities regarding school spirit and student advocacy across campus.“We are the people that make our campus, and our voices do matter, Garrett said.”Homecoming Queen CandidatesThe five candidates for Homecoming Queen are Madelyn Roe, Lauren McMorris, Elizabeth Rea, Haley Garcia, and Kylie Swinford. Swinford, a senior exercise science and wellness major from Hokes Bluff, said she is a member of 14 different organizations, 11 of which where she holds a leadership position. Swinford said she hopes she can be a representation of the idea that a student can be involved in many things and still earn a degree.“Getting a degree is hard, especially as someone who is a woman in STEM,” Swinford said. “But there is something about getting involved that really just changes your life.I would not have the friendships I have or the connections.”Lauren McMorris, a junior exercise science and wellness major from Pell City, said she enjoyed getting to talk to different people, and she liked having conversations with other students, whether that was giving them a compliment or noticing a common interest. McMorris said this was her first time running for Homecoming Queen. As someone who is involved in the Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority, Freshman Forum, and being a Gamecock Orientation leader, McMorris said she is excited to see how being involved in these organizations can help her in her future. Elisabeth Rea, a senior English major from Pell City, said she was very shy as a freshman, but she was encouraged to join different organizations, including being president of the Honors College, her sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha, SGA, and the Music Teachers National Association. She said these opportunities helped her grow as a person.Rea said if she wins, she hopes to focus on student involvement, as she said that helped her flourish as an individual.“Of course, we are here to grow our education and get the degree,” Rea said. “But that secondary level of university is the community, and I think so many students struggle to find their place on campus. I want to focus on being that voice encouraging students to get involved and find their true belongings here at Jax State.”Voting for Homecoming King and Queen will open to students at midnight on Thursday and close at 4 p.m. The winners will be announced at the Homecoming Carnival, hosted by the SGA on Thursday night from 5 to 9 p.m.</div></body>
