Bradford, Dade County Commissioner District 4 announced today that she will introduce a proposal at the November 5th workshop meeting of the County Commissioners calling for a 90-day moratorium on the approval of all new data center projects in Dade County.“Our roads, our water systems, and our electrical grid were built to serve the citizens and families of this county – not the balance sheets of out-of-state corporations,” said Commissioner Melissa Bradford.“Before we commit a single additional acre, gallon, or kilowatt to a data center, we owe it to our residents to understand exactly what these facilities will take from our community and what, if anything, they will give back.”The moratorium would temporarily block the building of datacenter facilities while the county conducts a thorough review of their impact on local infrastructure and residents. During the 90-day period, the Commissioner is calling for the county to:Assess water and power capacity to ensure residential, agricultural, and small business needs are protected and prioritized; Evaluate the strain on county roads, emergency services, and utilities, and determine who pays for upgrades – taxpayers or developers; allow special use board to consider required regulations and tax incentive policies to ensure any future agreements deliver real, lasting benefits to local citizens; Hold public hearings so residents and local business owners have a direct voice in decisions that will shape the county for decades.“This is not about saying no to growth,” Commissioner Bradford added. “It is about saying yes to growth that works for the people who actually live here. A 90-day pause is a small price to pay to get this right. Once the ground is broken and the water is spoken for, there is no going back.”Communities across the country have seen rapid data center expansion bring increased utility rates, depleted water resources, and heavy demands on power grids, often with few permanent local jobs in return. Commissioner Bradford believes Dade County should learn from those experiences rather than repeat them.Residents are encouraged to attend the Board of County Commissioners meeting on November 4th.</div></body>
