The process started in 2022, when historical research revealed that the family of the park’s namesake used racially restrictive covenants in their land sales. The city has spent the last couple years assessing how to rename the park. It took name submissions in 2025. Residents came up with a number of names. Some asked to name it after the late Robbinsdale baker Marjorie Johnson, others suggested the name “Shoreline Park,” while others asked for a Dakota or an indigenous name.In the last month, some Native American leaders held a private naming ceremony to select a unified choice from their camp. However, that isn’t the official name for the park.Mayor Sutton said the council is now weighing a number of different options, including the Dakota name. The other option would be co-naming, so using the Dakota name as well as another name option, or going with a different option entirely.“The council recognizes the emotion behind this decision. I think it’s great that we’ve got so much resident input and so much passion in the room that you know, we’ve got some input to work with,” Sutton said.Sutton explained that the issue was tabled in October due to some absences at the council meeting. He said the city will return to it, but they have a lot of work to get through. </div></body>
