Tony Scott, R-112th, right, with one of his daughters, Addison, outside the polls at Monroe Elementary School.

MONROE, Conn. — On a night when Democratic Party candidates swept to victories in most races across the nation, Republican legislator, Tony Scott, fended off a challenge from Democrat, Wiley Mullins of Easton to win a fourth consecutive term as representative of the state’s 112th District.“While voters across Connecticut and the USA made their voices heard with a loud repudiation of President Donald Trump, I am proud to say I easily won tonight and am humbled to be elected to go to Hartford for my fourth term representing the 112th District,” Scott said. The final unofficial results show Scott winning 5,998 (54.7 percent) to 4,968 (45.3 percent) over Wiley, a businessman who ran a quiet campaign.“I am happy with these results and glad folks in 112th District see I am a true moderate Republican who listens to all constituents,” Scott said.Scott has lived in Monroe since 2008, where he and his wife, Jennifer raised their twin daughters Lauren and Addison, who are now seniors at Masuk High School.“Affordability, it’s something I hear constantly — that it’s just too expensive to live in this state,” he said during the campaign. “I want my daughters to be able to live in Connecticut after college. It might be too expensive for them and they will go to live in another state.”

Scott’s twin daughters, from left, Addison and Lauren.

Aside from graduating college students, Scott said there are many older residents who may not be able to retire here. “We have to fix that,” he said, “and when I say we, that is Republicans and Democrats.”He had served on the Parks and Recreation Commission in Monroe, before filling a vacancy on the Town Council. When longtime 112th District representative, J.P. Sredzinski, a fellow Republican, resigned in 2021, it sparked a three-way-race to finish his term.Scott emerged victorious and served the district through the COVID-19 pandemic. Then, just one year later, a district map revision reshaped the 112th, which lost Newtown and added portions of Easton and Trumbull to Monroe. Two years ago, Scott battled stage two throat cancer. He is currently in remission.Mullins is a small business owner with experience in marketing and civic engagement. According to the Easton Democrats’ website, he “is focused on supporting local agriculture, strengthening public education, and encouraging responsible growth while preserving the character of our communities.”Electric rates, gas pricesDuring his campaign, Scott said Connecticut ranks among the top five states with the most expensive electric rates, gas prices and taxes. He acknowledged that gas prices are higher because of the Iran War, but said Connecticut should control what it can to help its residents.“Today, we could waive the gas tax and do a gas tax holiday,” Scott said. “The state makes more revenue when gas prices go up, so the state can afford to do that.”Scott said high electric rates make it difficult for Connecticut businesses to compete with companies in other states. “We are not helping businesses grow, which hurts jobs and wages,” he said. “We should analyze the public benefits charge and remove most, if not all, of that to relieve residents’ electric bills.”“The Connecticut public benefits charge is a state-mandated fee that pays for various social and energy access programs for those in need. The state uses the money from the fee to help low-income households afford power, support energy efficiency and fund investments that further environmental goals,” according to the Connecticut General Assembly website.‘A question of priorities’

Tony Scott votes on Election Day.

Scott said tackling the state’s problems all comes down to a question of priorities.“We need better priorities of how to spend that money,” he said of state budgets. “An example is homelessness. For a state as wealthy as we are, we should not have the number of homeless folks we do. Second, if education is a priority, we should be funding it properly and permanently.”“The cold season is coming and the homeless will be in desperate need,” Scott said. “Some funds are allocated to illegal immigrants’ health care. That’s millions and millions of dollars that could be allocated to homelessness or education in all 169 municipalities.”One major issue towns like Monroe are facing is the Connecticut Legislature’s push for more affordable housing and apartments to be built throughout the state. A sweeping housing law, Public Act 25-1, recently passed, making it easier for developers to build apartments along commercial streets. Some critics argue that it takes local control away from town zoning boards and commissions.Scott voted against the bill. “I have fought consistently over the last four years as ranking member of the Housing Committee to keep local control in the hands of locally elected officials,” he said. “These folks know their towns better than anyone who’s talking and voting in Hartford.”Scott said his interactions with constituents in Monroe, Trumbull and Easton were his biggest motivation to run for another term in the legislature.“The thing I love most, is how closely I interact with the community, being invested and going to events like Eagle Scout awards and the Think Pink Palooza,” Scott said. “I feel that I can get very close to the community members and they know I’m around and willing to listen.”All respectful comments with the commenter’s first and last name are welcome.
