West Virginia men’s soccer has a championship, and now it has a chance to chase another one in front of its own fans. The Mountaineers beat James Madison 2–0 Tuesday night to claim a share of the Sun Belt regular-season title and the conference tournament’s No. 1 seed. The next stop is Georgia Southern on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 3 p.m. in Morgantown. WVU shares the regular-season trophy with Marshall, but the Mountaineers’ top seed gives them the right to play at home throughout their conference tournament run, according to WVU Athletics. Read the official WVU account.Pablo Pozos scored in the sixth minute at James Madison, and Civan de Jesus Ferreira added the second goal after halftime. Goalkeeper Toby Mawer made three saves to complete the shutout. The win was West Virginia’s sixth straight clean sheet, extending its scoreless defensive streak to 577 minutes. That defensive run is what makes the Mountaineers so interesting entering the postseason. They have built a formula that can travel, then earned the opportunity to use it at home. An opponent that falls behind against this team has to chase an equalizer while facing a defense that has spent weeks keeping games under control. The championship also gives Sunday’s opener a clear purpose for fans. WVU has already done enough to earn hardware, and the next question is whether it can turn that advantage into another trophy. The program won both the Sun Belt regular season and tournament in 2024, making this a familiar opportunity with a different group.A top seed brings expectations along with convenience. Georgia Southern gets its own chance to spoil the celebration, and a tournament game can change on a single finish or defensive mistake. But West Virginia has earned the stronger position. A championship is secured, the defense is rolling and the next round belongs in Morgantown.Archival 2023 Mountain State Derby at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Wvfunnyman / Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0.
