From managing the orchard floor to scouting for diseases, several tasks can help protect nut quality and prepare trees for the next growing season.

Erika Chernoh of Oregon State University Extension advises growers to begin by mowing grass and weeds on the orchard floor down to one-quarter inch. Growers should also make one final pass with a flail mower shortly before harvest. This can break up debris that may contain filbertworm larvae while creating a cleaner surface for harvest equipment.

Irrigation timing is another important consideration. Irrigation should be shut off early enough to allow the soil to dry before harvest begins. Dry orchard conditions can make it easier for equipment to operate and help prevent harvest delays.

Growers with later-maturing hazelnut varieties should harvest as much of the crop as possible before the fall rains arrive. Although this may require additional passes through the orchard, collecting nuts under drier conditions can reduce the risk of kernel mold.

This is also a good time to scout for Eastern filbert blight. Growers should look for brown or dead leaves that stand out against the surrounding green canopy. Areas with branch dieback or visible cankers should be flagged so the affected wood can be pruned during dormancy.

Young hazelnut trees may also need a copper-based spray before the rainy season to help manage bacterial blight. Growers should follow product labels and local recommendations when planning any treatment.

Fall also provides an opportunity to test soil pH. If testing shows that lime is needed, applying it during the fall gives the material time to react with the soil over the winter. This can help improve soil pH before the next growing season.

Completing these orchard tasks before and during harvest can help growers protect their crop, reduce disease risks and prepare their trees for the year ahead.

Read the full article in the September issue of Pacific Nut Producer Magazine.
