HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - In June, Forrest General Hospital laid out its vision for an expansion project: more beds, more space, and less waiting. What was a construction site just months ago opened for the first time as the grey wing of the Emergency Department Tuesday.“These 12 rooms, while they are beautiful and definitely create some comfort, they also are going to be able to meet the needs of the community to get them home faster so that they can truly heal faster,“ Chief Operating Officer Dr. Kim Reddish said.Reddish says the hospital saw a need and made plans to address it.“We are definitely acknowledging some of the challenges that we’ve had when it comes to capacity in our emergency room and longer wait times than what we want,“ she said.Reddish says the communities the hospital serves are constantly growing. Forrest General is working to meet that demand.“We serve over 80,000 patients a year through this ER, and that’s service to more than 19 counties that surround us, and we’re grateful to be able to provide that service, and this is just a preview of how we’re going to continue to do that and grow and do that better and better year over year,“ Reddish said. With this portion of the expansion complete, crews can move on to the next step of the plan.“This is not the end of our journey when it comes to remodeling, and we’ll have another 12 new rooms in just about a year,” Reddish said. “So, we will continue this process over the next year and continue to serve the community.“In total, the expansion will be four phases. It is projected to be complete in 2027.

WDAM 7 On Your Side composer template image (WDAM7)

Want more WDAM 7 news in your inbox?
