Some students in the College of Agriculture have not been around cattle before, and the program gives them early experience with livestock."Students are involved in every process that these steers go through. So, they'll be involved in the daily health checks, the feedings, but also any sort of processing, vaccinations, any sort of ultrasound. We'll do evaluations," said Hannah DelCurto-Wyffels.DelCurto-Wyffels, an animal and range sciences professor, said the program helps students build on what they already knew or gain new knowledge and skills."It's really neat to give students the opportunity to either expand what they already know, or give that foundational knowledge that they'll need to take into their future careers," said Hannah DelCurto-Wyffels.Beyond the Steer-A-Year classes, the cattle are also used to teach beef production and meat science. When the animals reach their harvest endpoint, the meat comes back to campus and is served in dining halls."We get to see everything from when they weaned those calves to feeding them out, to going to harvest, to then the end product and meat product that's then fed on the dining hall. It's been super interesting, something that not everybody gets to see," said Tucker Lytton.Lytton completed the program as an undergraduate and now handles day-to-day operations as the graduate student manager."It was super beneficial. The hands-on learning is something that you don't get everywhere you go. You learn stuff in the classroom. Then you actually get to come out here to the farm and practice it in real time on real animals," he said.Cooper Beene is a fourth-year undergraduate student, who has worked as a staff member for the program. This year, he actually gets to take the classes."I've seen the background of what we're doing, but never like actually seen the front. So, just looking forward to like actually see the data," he said.Students collect data on how much the steers are eating and how much weight they gain over a period of time.DelCurto-Wyffels said producers interested in donating steers, they are looking for calves that have been weaned, castrated and dehorned before donation, and they should weigh between 500 and 800 pounds. Those interested in donating steers can contact DelCurto-Wyffels at 406-994-3752 or hannah.delcurto@montana.edu. The program also accepts financial donations.</div></body>
