<div>Mesa County Valley School District 51 (D51) teachers who teach concurrent enrollment classes at CMU will now receive adjunct faculty status and additional compensation under a new agreement. CMU announced this agreement through a CMUNow article on Sept. 3.“D51 teachers who offer CMU concurrent enrollment courses will be considered CMU Adjunct Faculty,” CMU Tech Director of Student Services Carianne Hatch said. “These instructors will have access to the CMU library, the CMU Center for Teaching and Learning as well as other resources and amenities afforded to CMU adjunct faculty.”18 D51 teachers are currently teaching CMU concurrent enrollment courses and have been on-boarded as CMU adjunct faculty.Impacted teachers will continue receiving their regular D51 salaries, according to Hatch. CMU will separately compensate them for teaching concurrent enrollment courses.The amount of compensation will vary depending on the amount of credit hours they teach. According to an adjunct faculty job listing for a Lecturer of Kinesiology and a listing for a part-time Lecturer of Business, adjunct faculty are paid between $600 and $850 per credit hour. They often teach one or two three-credit hour classes a semester.Higher Learning Commission policy requires that faculty members demonstrate qualifications in their specific field through either 18 graduate-level credit hours in their teaching discipline or documented tested experience.CMU adjunct faculty typically need a master’s degree in a specific field, or a master’s degree with 18 credits in that field. Instructors must be evaluated and approved by the CMU department in which they will teach.Concurrent enrollment allows high school students to earn college credits while completing their high school coursework. This partnership serves as the university’s last step for their “radical affordability program” and ten year vision to increase education fulfillment across the Western Slope, according to CMUNow.“Every concurrent course taken saves local families money because the courses are tuition-free,” Hatch said. “The students taking the courses also get a head start in preparing for college-level academic rigor and standards.”CMU’s goal with this agreement is for more D51 students to gain college credits in high school.“Supporting teachers who go above and beyond their standard teaching load and who are interested in teaching college-level courses will support offering more high school college credit options in the future,” Hatch said. “We do expect in time that additional qualified instructors will offer additional course opportunities to D51 students and families.”The Criterion reached out to CMU’s Marketing & Communications Department on three separate instances to coordinate interviews with faculty members impacted by the change.
