The Sugden clock tower has been a visual and auditory staple of the campus since its construction. However, late this summer, the clock went out of commission and has remained silent since.“The sound is controlled by a control box and touch panel inside the clock tower,” University Communications &amp; Media Relations Coordinator Rubi Olvera said. “The control panel on the wall that tells the clock the time is out of order.”The tower, connected to the Cohen Student Union, rings on the hour and at every half-hour through a computer-operated speaker system, when operating properly. At the request of Student Government, it plays the FGCU fight song, “Follow the Eagle,” at noon, and also plays the school’s alma mater, “Where Our Wings Will Take Us,” at 5 p.m. every day, at the request of Athletics. With the clock hands frozen in time and no tolling of the bells, the campus has been quieter than usual. For some, the bell going off has become part of their routine, so its silence did not take long to be noticed. Junior Brogan Callioni realized it was down shortly after the semester started.“I’m over by that area a lot, so I would always hear it,” said Callioni. “It took me about a week before I was like, ‘It’s kind of quiet.’”Other students, however, had not realized it stopped ringing.“Honestly, I haven’t noticed. Not until you mentioned it just now,” said senior Kevin Roblejo. After realizing its absence, he expressed his wishes for the bell’s return to daily campus life.“I kind of liked it, I didn’t think it was too intrusive. If anything, I wish it was louder,” said Roblejo. “I hope it gets fixed soon.”Senior Ariana Carter was also unaware of the bell’s absence until it was mentioned. However, she did not share the same sentiment as Roblejo.“It was more of a nuisance to me. I found it annoying,” said Carter. “I’ll go on with or without it, I graduate soon anyway.”The Sugden family donated the clock tower as part of a gift in 2003. In a 2018 Eagle News article, then-Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. J Michael Rollo said the bell’s primary purpose was to tell time, but also to signify a university’s status as an institution for higher education. With silence echoing throughout campus, it may not be just the bell’s ringing that is missed, but its declaration of school spirit and the status of higher education.“Efforts are underway to resolve the issue so that the clock is back up and running as soon as possible,” said Olvera. As of Sept. 19, the issue is resolved.</div></body>
