Additional light rain fell throughout the weekend of September 19-20 as flood water gradually receded. Below is a brief summary of the event:An area of low pressure gradually deepened as it descended the the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains, drawing copious amounts of moisture north ahead of it. This moisture channel positioned itself over us by early September 18, and would feed a widespread band of light to moderate rain, even heavy in some pockets through much of the morning. This round by itself brought up to, if not over, 1″ of rain to portions of the area. Closer to Rochester, this rain continued through the afternoon, bringing nearly 2″ in total to some locations. After about 4 PM that evening, a meteorological feature known as the low-level jet began to ramp up, a typical feature ahead of a deepening low pressure. This “low-level jet” acted as a strong feed of abundant moisture into our neck of the woods, while also drawing instability up from the south. This, along with the lift provided by the approaching low pressure, began to kick off a skinny band of showers &amp; thunderstorms along I-90 just after 6 PM or so. This skinny band lifted slightly north, and positioned itself from Fairmont, MN to La Crosse, WI through much of the evening, gradually sagging southward as the night went on. This brought hours of heavy rain and lightning to a thin stretch of our viewing area, amounting to as much of 8″ in some spots. Below is a list from the NWS of reported rainfall totals from across our viewing area:The most significant rainfall from this event by and large missed the areas that need the rain most locally, but we all still saw a healthy dose. Rochester, in fact, has now seen more rain than average for the entire month of September, with Mason City also slowly crawling itself out of the rainfall deficit it has been in most of this year.
