(KPLC) - Jellystone Park in Lake Charles held its Black Pot Cook-Off on Saturday, drawing visitors of all ages for a day of food, family and fun.Cooks fired up their pots for the competition, including participant Lane Sonnier, who helped prepare one of the dishes up for judging.“Short rib and ribeye jambalaya,” Sonnier said, handing out his dish.Park owner Sean Vidrine said events like the cook-off are about more than just good food.“The best part about my job is I get to watch people enjoy their families. Kids are not on their phones, they’re in the pool, they’re on the water park, they’re playing putt-putt golf, they’re doing gym mining, they’re enjoying the music,” Vidrine said. The cook-off also serves a bigger purpose. According to Vidrine, all proceeds go to charity.“Everything that we get from the cook-off goes to charity. 100% of the dollars do,” Vidrine said. That money goes directly to the Care Camp Foundation, which helps children with cancer across the country. The park itself opened May 21, 2025, and has already added new features, including an on-site bar that opened this July. Food and Beverage Supervisor Rebecca Anderson said the goal is to offer something for everyone.“We’re blending family-friendly fun, but also still having, you know, live music, alcoholic beverages. So we’re trying to kind of have a hybrid for everything and have it for everybody,” Anderson said.Saturday’s cook-off led into a concert Saturday night featuring Louisiana musician Wayne Toups. Vidrine said Toups has been a longtime friend of the park.“Wayne Toups is a Louisiana legend. I’ve known him for probably 30 years. He’s a great friend, a great guy, and he is a legend, and he still draws a crowd. So anytime that Wayne gives us the opportunity to bring him to Jellystone, we take it,” Vidrine said. For Vidrine, keeping that Louisiana spirit alive is central to what the park is all about.“One thing that I want to make sure that I do is continue to keep the Cajun culture alive here in Lake Charles, Louisiana, because it’s a big part of what we do,” Vidrine said.Jellystone Park’s next cook-off is set for Nov. 21, when the venue will host a Gumbo Cook-Off featuring live music from Ryan Foret.</div></body>
