(WDBJ) - There’s a spot off Lee Highway in Buchanan where the parking lot is always packed and the kitchen is always sizzling. We’re stopping in this Botetourt County staple to meet the ‘Queen’ and crew at the North Star Restaurant in this week’s Hometown Eats!“Little building, big parking lot, still looks like a hundred cars outside,” said North Star Restaurant owner Ashley Clark. If you’re on the hunt for country cookin’ in Botetourt County, just follow the North Star. Welcome to the North Star Restaurant on Lee Highway about a half mile from I-81 in Buchanan.“I’ve been here for twenty some years,” said Clark.Ashley Clark first walked into this roadside dive in 2003 with plans to make some quick cash.“I’m a teenager, barely a teen and I need money, a car, gas, blah, blah, blah so we didn’t plan on being here. I went to school for different things,” said Clark.Little did she know years later she and her husband Brian would be the ones signing checks.“I bought it and here we are,” said Clark.Six days a week you’ll find these two in the kitchen cutting up with their customers and serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner.“It’s good homemade food. You don’t get that in regular restaurants. Usually, they just throw it out of a bag,” said regular customer Karen.Breakfast is always a hit around here like the country platter, sausage and gravy biscuits, and western omelet.“15 pounds of bacon at least a day,” said Clark.“Everything on the menu is great. Just whatever you feel like you want for the day,” said regular customer Jamie. The lunch and dinner crowd loves the hand-pattied hamburger steak.“We probably do about 40 pounds of burger a day,” said Clark. And daily specials like the club sandwich that they bring with a to-go box.Karen made sure to tell us about the weekend special, “On Sunday they have the homemade rolls. Yum!”It’s been a gathering place for generations of locals and travelers, some of those adventures even led to another North Star, way north of Botetourt County.“That’s in Alaska so someone took a picture of it and brought it to us,” said Clark. This place is full of personality, and nobody represents that better than Rena.“You probably met the queen,” said Clark.“The queen don’t cook,” joked regular customer and “queen” Rena.Rena is known as the queen and she never misses a day.“I’m here twice a day,” said Rena. And one day, it saved her life.“I had my stroke here, they took care of me and got me an ambulance, so they really saved my life,” explained Rena. Both Ashely and Brian know they have a responsibility to those who make this restaurant part of their daily routine.“I have one customer out here sometimes right when I’m pulling in and his breakfast is on the table when I open the door. Same guy every morning,” said Clark.“I bring my family here, now I’m bringing my grandchildren here,” said Karen.“My brother, my mom worked here a little bit before she passed so family like I said. Deb the previous owner is like family she is like another mom she was there when my kid was born,” said Clark.“You’ll enjoy the food. Once you come, you’ll keep on coming,” added Karen.North Star Restaurant, a hometown eat shining bright in Botetourt County.</div></body>
