PAUL, MN—Opening their season with six of eight games against the newly formed Minnesota Prospects League has been as challenging as expected for the Wisconsin Selects. After dropping a pair of games two weeks ago to the Ice Wolves, Wisconsin trekked to St. Paul to play the Ice Wolves again and the other three teams in the league. On Saturday, a late goal gave the Wolves a 4-3 win over Wisconsin, but they rebounded with their first win versus the league, a 4-1 defeat of the Auroras. Sunday, they faced the league’s top team, the Bobcats, and discovered why in an 8-0 loss. They finished the weekend with a hard fought 2-0 loss to the Bird Dogs. “Other than the first half against the Bobcats, we were competitive all weekend,” said head coach Dan Bauer. “It was another great weekend of top-level competition for us,” he continued. “Getting to play against these teams is a fantastic step for our program.”Wisconsin sits at 2-6 on the season and will head to Superior next weekend to play Badger City and the Thunder Bay Queens. MN Ice Wolves 4 SELECTS 3 Wisconsin got off to a good start on Saturday striking first on a rebound goal by Olivia Sapeta. Jordyn King drove down the right wing getting a low shot on net where Sapeta was waiting to bury the rebound. The Ice Wolves tied the game at 10:42 on a bad angle shot that snuck past goaltender Kennedy Kohlman. Brenalyn Goetz put the Selects back on top just over a minute later, reloading a shot that was blocked and firing past Payton Hassler for a 2-1 lead. Isabelle Janke started the play winning a board battle and getting the puck to a streaking Goetz who had just jumped on the ice. Wisconsin would go up 3-1, forty-nine seconds later, when Penny Loeffelholz converted yet another rebound after picking off an errant pass at the right dot. Hassler made the first save, but Loeffelholz knocked home her rebound chance. Izzy Johnson forced the bad pass with a heavy forecheck. The Ice Wolves would cut the lead to 3-2 on a goal by Brooklyn Carlstein with 3:40 to play in the first half. The weekend games were two twenty-five-minute halves. Kohlman made two big stops with forty-five seconds left in the period to keep it at 3-2. Shots were 13-11 in favor of the Ice Wolves.Kohlman withstood the Wolves second-half push early with a breakaway save on Carlsten while her sister Brooklyn was shut down on a breakaway for the Selects. A misguided pass led to the Ice Wolves game tying goal by Taylor Risch who snapped a wrist shot Kohlman from the top of the circle. Tied at 3-3, Wisconsin missed a couple of grade A chances in the games final two minutes. Loeffelholz tried to go five-hole on a breakaway, but Hassler closed the door. Johnson pushed a rebound wide with about twenty seconds to play, and Hassler saved a redirect by Johnson in close. It appeared that the game was destined for a tie, but Mia Simones made one final rush into the Selects zone, cut inside the defenseman and sent the game winner over Kohlman’s glove with 4.6 seconds on the clock. It was a disappointing end to a well-played game by the Selects.

SELECTS Stats:

GOALS: 1—Sapeta (1) – King, Holzman-Bryne. 2—Goetz (1) – Janke. 3—Loeffelholz (5) – Johnson. The line of Penny Loeffelholz, Dana Jacobson and PaisLee Lystig accounted for three of the goals. However, it was Izzy Johnson who started the scoring at 15:58, circling out of the right-wing corner and attacking the Auroras net through the dot. The Western Wisconsin senior ripped a shot through the five-hole of goalie McKenna Carr for a 1-0 Selects lead. It became 2-0 when Jacobson sent Lystig in on the right-wing and her shot was stopped by Carr, but Loeffelholz drove the net and deposited the rebound. It would be Loeffelholz, who is off to a great start for Wisconsin, that would set up the third goal. The Cap City junior danced her way down the middle unleashing a shot that Carr saved, but Lystig gathered the rebound to make it 3-0.Loeffelholz notched her seventh goal in six games with just thirty-seven seconds left in the period to make it 4-0. It was another rebound goal for Wisconsin as she punched Grace du Vair’s shot past Carr. Wisconsin outshot the Auroras 22-13 in the first half. The Auroras spoiled goaltender Anika Muelller’s shutout bid with a late goal with 1:09 remaining. Mueller finished with 24 saves, earning the win.

SELECTS Stats:

GOALS: 1—Johnson (2) – Sapeta. 2—Loeffelholz (6) – Jacobson, Lystig. 3—Lystig (2) – Loeffelholz. 4—Loeffelholz (7) – du Vair, Jacobson. They currently sit on top of the league standing at 8-1, having outscored their opponents 53-18. Madelyn Baker and Leila Dalum each scored twice, for Dalum her 8th and 9th of the season. The Bobcats dominated the game, but especially the opening half, building a 7-0 lead and outshooting Wisconsin 22-2. Goalie Anika Mueller was the victim in that opening half and was replaced by Kohlman in the second half of the contest. An undisciplined defensive zone repeatedly gave the Bobcats open looks from inside the house leaving Mueller defenseless. Kohlman saw fewer shots in the second half, making 13 saves while allowing one goal. The Fond du Lac junior was spectacular, making several highlight reel stops as the Bobcats continued to swarm the Selects cage.

SELECTS Stats:

GOALS: None. Wisconsin failed on numerous occasions to capitalize on their high-danger chances as Bird Dogs goalie Lucy Schaeffer stopped all 23 shots to earn the shutout.Minnesota’s Senna Hofmann and Allegra Kuhn scored in a span of 1:29 in the first half providing the margin of victory. The Bird Dogs improved their record to 4-2-3. Both goals came on costly turnovers in the defensive zone by Wisconsin.“Good teams make you pay for your mistakes,” admitted Bauer. “As a group we need to take better care of the puck, especially in our own end.”Olivia Sapeta, Penny Loeffelholz and PaisLee Lystig all had good scoring chances in the first half despite the Bird Dogs owning a slight 11-9 shot advantage.Wisconsin had two powerplays in the second half but were unable to get on the scoreboard. A scary moment occurred late in the game when Selects’ forward Jordyn King was awkwardly run into the boards by a Bird Dog defenseman. There was no penalty assessed, but King stayed motionless on the ice for several minutes as medical staff attended to her. She was eventually helped off the ice and returned home following the game, escaping any serious injury.Bauer remains confident that these games are a good litmus test for the team. “We played better than we did two weeks ago,” he said. “Those Minnesota teams show you why their brand of hockey is so successful. They set the pace and you have to match it. We went 1-3 on the weekend, but honestly, we weren’t that far removed from going 3-1. Wins and losses aren’t always the most accurate evaluation tool available. We know we can play better.”

SELECTS Stats:

GOALS: None. SAVES: Kohlman 18.
