This project has gone before many meetings and has received significant pushback, but the fight to stop the town from allowing this is not over yet.A packed Gorham Planning Board meeting quickly turning empty after the vote. The approval of the highly controversial project comes after the developers reduced the size of the plan, cutting the number of parking spots and increasing the buffer between it and the homes in the area. But those changes are not enough for a group of residents who say the warehouse doesn't fit their neighborhood.“They are really kind of deaf to our wishes,” Gorham resident Nadia Margolis said.Margolis was one of several people who stormed out of the meeting, shouting at the board members.“They may think they are immune, because they are appointed, but they still have a moral responsibility,” Margolis said. “The citizens here, their wellbeing, the economy, everything, and it's all going to be hurt by the presence of Amazon.”With the facility abutting several neighborhoods, others worry about safety.“I am concerned about the traffic impact,” Gorham resident Matt Steinback said. “I got a couple kids that go to school here in town, they ride up and down the street.”While it won approval Monday night, the fight is not over.Josh Trombley with United Gorham is gathering signatures to pass a moratorium to delay the project.More than 400 residents have already signed up.“If this were out in the middle of nowhere, some of these things would be OK, but where it's in the backyard of a lot of our residents here in town, it just isn't a good fit for our community,” Trombley said.He needs about 1,000 more signatures to potentially get the issue in front of voters.“The best-case scenario for everybody is for the town council to see how populated this is and to take action themselves,” Trombley said. This vote by the board is not final. The plan still needs approval by several state agencies, such as the Department of Transportation and the Department of Environmental Protection. Even if that gets approved, the town council could still step in, adopting a moratorium itself, without a public vote.</div></body>
