Nebraska City Mayor Bryan Bequette tells KMA News the upgrades are included in a proposed expansion."We're going to actually add a couple of vertical lagoons," said Bequette. "We're actually adding a couple of large pieces of equipment to actually do settling and separation. Then, a lot of the existing ones have to be refitted. We've been having a lot of trouble--I think we've spoken in the past about the flushable wipes, which are flushable when they leave your house, but they really muck up a water treatment facility. That is hopefully slowing down as people become educated on that. So, we've had to repair a lot of that, especially our circular towers that we have now."Bequette says the city is expanding its current facilities, rather than building new."We're not building a new site," he said. "We're actually engineering in a couple of vertical lagoons. It's going to give us more capacity, but it's also going to update everything that we have."The mayor says some of the work is already underway."There's two phases to it," said Bequette. "The first phase is to be completed by the end of 2029, and the second phase will take a couple years after that. We'll also obviously be operating as we go. So, it's not a new build, it's build within what we have, and then interconnect and keep everything working together."Bequette says state revolving loan funds available for utilities will cover the remaining costs of the $38 million project.</div></body>
