Several floats made an appearance, but the Mio Social Smoothies float stood out among the rest with a handmade 7-foot-tall eagle and Liberty Bell.Owners of Mio Social Smoothies, Peter Malan and Sam Perez began, their masterpiece in April with the intention of creating a statement float that signified our nation’s 250 years of freedom. They started with the eagle, forming the base with chicken wire and paper mache then covered the outer portion with feathers and thin foam. They similarly created a giant Liberty Bell using pool noodles for the base and 2×6’s to construct the frame that read “Let Freedom Ring.” Even Malan’s nephews walked alongside the float in their homemade eaglet costumes made with more foam, feathers, and heaps of hot glue.Perez and Malan are now looking into donating the eagle to Fairview Schools as a mascot display piece and are open to donating the Liberty Bell to any organization that would be interested in utilizing it.Malan and Perez’s hallmark float displayed their logo for Mio Social Smoothies that opened on May 30 and offers fresh blended smoothies, refreshers, and specialty drinks. He just recently added a hot pink food trailer to be able to offer delicious beverages at local events.“We are already brainstorming for the Christmas parade,” says Malan and looks forward to creating more extravagant floats.Mio Social Smoothies is located at 56 Richard Drive in Mio.

Pictured after the parade we (l-r) Ben Neculai, Zeke Neculai, Shalom Neculai, Simona Neculai, Levi Neculai, Peter Malan, Dana Malan, George Malan, Laura Malan, Sam Perez, John Malan, Adrian Resteman, Lucia Resteman, and Dorin Resteman.

Construction of the eagle.
