(WOOD) — Enbridge has reportedly paused its Line 5 rerouting project while it cleans up a natural gas spill in northern Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources requested the pause. In a recently published letter, Wisconsin DNR Secretary Karen Hyun said the agency is "deeply concerned about this spill and immensely frustrated by other recent noncompliance events.""The department requests that (Enbridge) halt work on the pipeline rerouting project until this event on the existing pipeline is sufficiently resolved and Enbridge has demonstrated that measures are in place to prevent future spill events related to all pipeline work," Hyun wrote.Approximately 84,000 gallons of liquid natural gas leaked and another 1.3 million gallons of natural gas vaporized after an incident last Tuesday in Iron County, Wisconsin.Wisconsin Public Radio reports that Enbridge has halted the work until the leak is resolved and preventative measures are in place to prevent future spills. The leak started around 10 a.m. Friday after a parked, unoccupied semi-truck rolled onto an open excavation site and struck the pipeline. Several nearby homes were evacuated and power was shut off as a precaution.<figure><img src="https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?type=thumbnail_580x000&amp;url=0ock1S_1ElLVGq900" alt="https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=0ock1S_1ElLVGq900" width="900" height="506" ><figcaption>An aerial view of the site of a natural gas spill in Iron County, Wisconsin, on Monday, Aug. 31, 2026. "However, the exclusion zone remains around the active incident site, and the 'no-fly' zone continues over the site issued by the Iron County Sheriff."Line 5 is a petroleum pipeline that spans 645 miles across Michigan — including through the Straits of Mackinac — from Superior, Wisconsin to Sarnia, Canada.A court ruled in 2023 that Line 5 was trespassing on land owned by the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and ordered the company to reroute the pipeline.Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc.
