But for one downtown Grand Junction toy store, those familiar blocks are the foundation of a global operation supplying collectors, schools, and even theme parks worldwide.

Located on North Seventh Street, EBricks is easily identified by “bRick”—a towering, one-ton steel LEGO minifigure sculpture standing guard outside. While the colorful retail storefront features brand-new sets, the true scale of the business lies hidden in the back.

With an inventory of over 20 million pieces spanning 91,000 different style variations, EBricks has become a cornerstone of the global LEGO enthusiast community.

From one childhood playset to a global network

The business began in 2001 when owner Kenneth Riskey set out to recreate a piece of his childhood by tracking down a specific 1984 LEGO Cargo Center set.

“Spring before college, I got this set. It was something that an older cousin had that I’d wanted as a kid,” Riskey said. “And all that to say, 33,000 parts later, I had a complete cargo center.”

That personal quest left Riskey with thousands of spare pieces. He built an Excel spreadsheet database to see if other collectors had similar needs. His parts list quickly caught the attention of LEGO’s corporate office, which reached out to ask if he could help supply their customers with older, out-of-catalog parts.

Since then, the relationship has expanded. Today, eBricks supplies several thousand resellers, roughly 3,000 schools for STEM, robotics, and engineering programs, and even official Legoland theme parks.

“Those are not owned by Lego, ironically,” Riskey noted. “So we supply all those parks with parts to build sculptures... Pretty much anywhere on earth that you can legally travel, we will ship Lego to you.”

The meticulous art of “the grid”

Getting those millions of individual parts into the hands of global builders is a massive manual undertaking. EBricks routinely buys used LEGO collections over the counter to keep plastic out of landfills and give the toys a second life. However, processing a bulk collection is a slow, detailed journey that can take up to five years.

Staff members inspect every single minifigure for quality control, checking for microscopic cracks in the armpits or torsos. Once approved, the pieces are carefully sorted into subcategories like bricks, plates, tiles, and slopes.

“Everything has a different category,” said store worker Speaker 2. “So all we’re doing here is taking the mail and putting it in the proper slot so it can get delivered properly.”

A high level of era-specific expertise is required. Staff must distinguish between subtle color variations—such as classic 1980s brown versus modern reddish-brown, or traditional light gray versus modern light bluish-gray—to ensure customers receive authentic pieces for historical builds.

“If you’ve got a modern part, it might look a little weird right next to the old part,” Speaker 2 explained. “So when we’re picking orders and we see what you’ve bought, we kind of understand the era that you’re buying for.”

Mending old memories

By specializing in discontinued elements, rare imports, and vintage oddities, EBricks has carved out a unique space alongside retail giants like Walmart and Target. Often, those retro blocks are used to rebuild more than just toys.

“Every year we have siblings where one will say, ‘My brother got this set when he was eight and absolutely loved it, and it ended up in the trash—it broke his heart. I want to recreate that moment,’” Riskey shared. “They’ll piece together the set, get the original instructions and box, and we can hand it to them over the counter so they can recreate that moment. It’s a warm story all the way around.”

Remarkably, EBricks manages this entire global retail, online, and bulk-sorting operation with a team of just seven employees.

For Grand Junction residents looking to declutter, EBricks offers a buy-back program for loose LEGO collections. Additionally, locals can bring in vintage LEGO cardboard boxes in exchange for store credit, helping preserve the history of play for generations to come.
