(KSLA) - A new vaccine is changing how doctors treat certain skin cancer patients, according to doctors in the ArkLaTex.</p><p>“Combining this new vaccine with a medicine called Keytruda has been shown over five years to increase the survival rate in melanoma patients by 49 percent,” Dr. Furrell said.</p><h2>How the vaccine works</h2><p>Doctors take a piece of the patient’s tumor and analyze it for mutations. Artificial intelligence helps scientists pick which mutations to target.</p><p>The vaccine is then built from that patient’s own genetic code, making every dose personalized. It’s paired with Keytruda, a drug already used to treat melanoma.</p><p>Doctors hope the discovery brings them closer to a preventative vaccine.</p><p>“I think so, because this vaccine is a messenger RNA vaccine. It’s the same kind of principle used in vaccines to treat coronaviruses and some other viruses,” Dr. Furrell said.</p><h2>Lowering melanoma risk</h2><p>Dr. Furrell said one way to lower melanoma risk is staying out of the tanning bed.</p><p>“The one thing you absolutely want to avoid to decrease the risk of melanoma is tanning beds. As few as 10 visits a year can double your lifetime risk of melanoma,” Dr. Furrell said.</p><p>The vaccine is not FDA-approved, and there is no release date. Doctors say the trial results are a sign of where cancer treatment is headed.</p></div></body>
