Standard Democrat file photo</figcaption></figure>CHARLESTON — For Charleston High School football coach Trent Adams, Monday’s first official practice won’t exactly represent a starting point. It will be more of a continuation.Adams, who is entering his second season leading the Bluejays, has spent the summer working with his players to prepare for the upcoming season. After Charleston finished 5-5 in Adams’ first year, the coach is eager to see that offseason work carry into the fall.“We just got out of summer practice,” Adams said. “We finished our summer camp with a contact camp up in (Saxony Lutheran High School) with New Madrid and Saxony. It was a good competition.“So for us, day one, we just want to see excitement about football season. It’s here.”High school football has evolved significantly from the days when the first official practice represented the beginning of installing offensive and defensive schemes. Adams and his staff have already spent considerable time teaching Charleston’s system this summer. The Bluejays have also had opportunities to compete against other programs, giving the coaching staff film to evaluate before official practices begin.“In the summertime, we started installing our offense and our defense and really starting to play against other teams, kind of see where we’re at and watching film,” Adams said. “It’s just going to be a continuation of the same thing.”That doesn’t mean there won’t be some changes once Monday arrives.Adams said conditioning will become a greater emphasis as the Bluejays prepare their players for the physical demands of an entire game. That will be particularly important for Charleston, which expects several players to contribute on both sides of the football.“We’ll condition a little bit more because it’s not going to be as hot,” Adams said. “Get our kids a little bit more ready for playing a full game. We’ve got a lot of kids who are going to play both ways.“It’s going to be the same drills, just kind of making sure we’re perfecting it.”Charleston will have a different look from the team Adams inherited a year ago.The Bluejays relied heavily on an experienced senior class during their 5-5 season, meaning younger players will now be asked to step into important positions.Adams sees both a challenge and an opportunity in that transition.“I think it’s good,” Adams said of the team’s enthusiasm and participation. “We’re young. We’re a young team. We were senior-heavy last year, so we’ve got some young guys that have to come in and play some key roles.“I think they’re excited to be able to play as a young guy. It’s going to help us in the future.”Monday will provide the next step in that development.Charleston is tentatively scheduled to begin its first official practice at 4 p.m. The Bluejays plan to spend the first hour in the weight room before moving onto the practice field from approximately 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.The latter field session is designed in part to avoid the worst of the August heat. For Adams and his young Bluejays, however, Monday’s biggest significance is simple: Football season has officially arrived.Charleston opens the regular season on August 28 at Kelly at 7 p.m.</div></body>
