<div>Mississippi students will soon see new coursework in financial literacy, computer science and civics as part of changes under Senate Bill 2294, also known as the Mississippi Math Act.The legislation adds new academic requirements designed to better prepare students for life after graduation by teaching practical skills alongside traditional classroom instruction."That's a good thing because that's not just educating them for things that are coming out of textbooks, but it's also educating them about life," said Shane Rogers, curriculum director for the Lauderdale County School District. "Being ready to navigate things like credit scores, balancing a checkbook a lot of the things that they are really experiencing sooner in life now and at a younger age than even a generation ago."Under the new requirements, students entering the sixth through eighth grades will be required to complete a financial literacy course by 2027. While the requirement does not take effect until next school year, Rogers said the district is already preparing for implementation."Like any initiative and anytime we add a new curriculum and things to our repertoire of what we offer to our students, there's going to be planning with that," Rogers said. "There's going to be professional learning that goes along with that, and so that'll be something that we'll work out as a team here."Rogers said he believes educators will welcome the changes because the curriculum focuses on practical knowledge students can use throughout their lives."I think educators will be excited about this because this is something that goes beyond just the textbook," Rogers said. "This is something that is real world and real life that can help our students to be better prepared to navigate the real world when they graduate high school."The first graduating class required to earn a personal finance credit before receiving a diploma will be the Class of 2032.</div>
