(WAVE) - More than 70 people in West Louisville will soon have access to affordable housing through a new development called Opportunity Village, local leaders said. Developers say residents could begin moving in sometime next year.

Rent and unit details

Opportunity Village will offer one- and two-bedroom apartments, with rent ranging from $695 to just under $1,300 per month.

The $19 million development will be built next to Norton West Louisville Hospital and the Goodwill Opportunity Campus, giving residents walkable access to additional services and support.

Who the complex is designed to serve

Amy Luttrell, president and CEO of Goodwill Kentucky, said the complex is intended to help people facing significant obstacles.

“They’re coming out of prison,” she mentioned when talking about some of the people who could benefit from this new complex. “They’re coming out of homelessness, out of drug treatment, and we see so many people who want to live a productive life. There are just some barriers that are too tough for them to get over without a partner, and we want to be that partner in the housing arena, along with other organizations that do housing, and make it a solvable problem for them.”

Luttrell described the project’s mission in broader terms as well.

“I always like to tell people the word opportunity means that conditions are right for your success,” she explained. “We see many people who have never had conditions that were right for their success. That’s what we’re all about: helping to change that so that it is, their journey is doable. They’re willing to work hard for it. It just needs to be something that actually is feasible for them. And that’s where we come in, to bridge that gap.”

City’s broader affordable housing effort

Opportunity Village is part of a citywide effort to expand affordable housing options across Louisville. Over the past three and a half years, the Metro has created more than 7,000 new units.

Mayor Craig Greenberg said the work is not finished.

“We have to channel this excitement to do projects like this over and over and over again right here in West Louisville, in East Louisville, in South Louisville, in the middle of our city, because every corner of our city has families who need more affordable housing,” he said.

The development team has been working on the project for approximately two years.
