The hyperscale center has sparked community pushback.Hollow Creek is a longtime neighborhood where Black families and a diverse population in Lexington have historically thrived, but the proposed facility could soon sit just yards behind the neighborhood.DartPoints, a Texas-based data center company that provides secure space, cloud services and network connections for businesses, has purchased a nearly 30-acre property off West New Circle Road.Erin Petrey is a Lexington resident, a former U.S. House candidate and someone who has helped regulate international data centers.“A lot of people were hoping that another manufacturing facility might go in there, one that would bring a lot of good jobs to the neighborhood and to the community. But the majority of the people who live around there are poorer,” Petrey said.“It's historically African American. And those, once again, are the kind of communities that usually get the short end of the stick,” she said.In a news release, the company said the project will support hyperscale, neo-cloud, artificial intelligence and other compute-intensive deployments. The property is zoned for data center use and includes an on-site substation. DartPoints said the site has 20 to 30 megawatts of existing capacity, with the potential to expand to 70 megawatts.“Hyperscale really starts at that 100 megawatt capacity. But 70 is getting pretty close,” Petrey said.“Lexington gives us a rare combination of existing infrastructure, a supportive power environment and the ability to scale in a meaningful way,” said Scott Willis, president and CEO of DartPoints. That model has sparked concern in the community. Online forums opposing the development and citing potential health risks, environmental concerns and other issues have grown. Community members are planning to meet at Zion Baptist Churchبوك on Monday.“There is no level of protection. People in communities feel better when there are regulations, when there are laws, when there are regulations and there are penalties for violating those regulations,” she said.Petrey said generative AI is unregulated at the state and federal levels and that communities like Lexington deserve transparency from developers, communication and clear regulations.“On things like noise pollution, making sure that ratepayers are protected, making sure that there are jobs, making sure that there's any mitigations for water pollution,” Petrey said.Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton said she supports tight control over data centers.“The mayor’s office was not made aware of this project until after the private sale of the Lexmark property was completed,” Gorton said. “We have informed them that we will not support public incentives for this project.”</div></body>
