After all the participants performed, they could return to the stage while the judges deliberated on the winners. Most of the nine acts consisted of musical performances, including singing, rapping and instrumental performances on bass and piano. Two participating students opted to showcase their writing instead: one with a short story and one with poems.Ultimately, the judges chose Cameron Mayhew, a second-year student who performed two original compositions on the piano, as the winner of the talent show.Second place was given to a contestant whose rap performance became unintentionally funny after an unfortunate fall on the stairs of the stage and the contestant who sang "Dangerous Woman" by Ariana Grande placed third.
Behind the scenes
The idea for this event originated with the president of Niner Notes, third-year student Christian Smith, and, in partnership with Legendary for advertising and marketing, took about two months to organize.In-person tryouts for the talent show occurred on Feb. 12, and virtual tryouts were due by Feb. 20. First-year student Sumiya Carter, who sang "Make You Feel My Love" by Adele at the show, decided to participate after initially performing for tryouts. In addition to promotional posts on Instagram days before the event, flyers were distributed around campus to advertise the event and attract both participants and audience, advertising the start time at 6 p.m.Through a red ticket provided at the entrance, the audience also had a chance to win candy prizes or gift cards in the raffles held in between performances.
Overcoming last-minute challenges
However, challenges for the organizers emerged as early as 72 hours before the event, as participants began to withdraw. Another issue with Amazon prevented the winners from obtaining their awards at the event, but Smith, who also served as the show's presenter, assured them they would be delivered."We actually had somebody call out five minutes before, and we made it work," Mark Dyce, a second-year student and the vice president of Niner Notes, said. "One thing about Charlotte students is they're always willing to help, and they're always willing to make the community better."Although Mayhew didn't participate in tryouts, she received an invitation from Dyce, who knew of her talent in piano, a day before the event due to withdrawals. Mayhew presented last, performing two original pieces that she composed less than a year ago, but remain unnamed. Through shaking hands, feeling nervous being in front of an audience and improvising in some parts, Mayhew delivered an enchanting piano performance that won her first place."I was so surprised when my name was called, because I thought, personally, I could have done better," Mayhew said regarding her performance.Recently, Mayhew also participated in Legendary's "Total Drama Island" event, where she ended as a finalist in a sword fight. At the end of the event, Smith hinted at Niner Notes' upcoming music festival in April. This is Niner Notes and Legendary's first talent show, and Niner Notes intends to continue making "Charlotte's Got Talent" a recurring event every semester.
