(WLUC) - A U.P. hospital is re-investing in its operations and its community with new equipment. The new da Vinci 5 surgical robot at Baraga County Memorial Hospital (BCMH) can now do what a team of people used to.“It makes surgeries easier for the surgeon,” said general surgeon Dr. Greg McBride. “That generally translates to less pain for patients and faster recoveries.”McBride has about 250 robotic surgeries to his name. He says most cases at BCMH involve hernias.“We cut that recovery, from an open hernia, from 4-6 weeks down to two (weeks) typically,” said McBride. “So, that’s a big difference for people to get back to work and their activities and things.”Down the hall is the hyperbaric chamber. Nurse practitioner Jeff Dauphinais says hyperbaric oxygen therapy can help grow new skin and tissue or treat diabetic patients with chronic foot wounds.“Once they are approved for the treatment, it is up to five days a week, typically, roughly about 90 minutes per session, and that can last up to 40 treatments,” said Dauphinais.Wound Care Center Program Director Linda Kovacs says this is one of two active hyperbaric chambers in the U.P. The other is in Iron Mountain.“We are quite excited to be able to serve patients all the way up to the Keweenaw,” said Kovacs. “The best way to do this is to have your primary care provider send us a referral.”Hospital CEO Rob Stowe says it’s about making care more accessible. “We know people aren’t gonna drive three hours, one way, 3-5 times a week, so that’s why we did it,” said Stowe. “We did it to make it convenient for those that have chosen this hospital for their care.”Stowe says there will be an open house Jan. 8 from 4-6 p.m. where you can interact with the hyperbaric chamber and DV5 robot. Stowe also wants your help giving the surgical robot a name.He says the hospital’s website will be updated soon to allow anyone to enter a suggestion for the new name of the robot. Stowe says you can also make suggestions at the open house next month.</div></body>
