<body><div>KIMBERLY, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — The Idaho Transportation Department hosted an open house on Tuesday evening to gather feedback on potential changes to a busy Magic Valley intersection. During the open house, ITD showcased two potential designs to increase the safety and efficiency of the intersection between Idaho Route 50 and Rock Creek Road (North 3800 East), located off the Hansen Bridge. (Idaho Transportation Department)</figcaption></figure>The department said the intersection has experienced the most crashes in District 4 since 2018, which encompasses South Central Idaho and the Magic Valley. The intersection poses challenges for drivers, including a limited line of sight and a skewed angle. The average daily traffic count reaches 8,600. Brent Brumfield, the project manager for ITD’s District 4, said that the Rock Creek Road intersection poses a unique risk compared to other intersections along the U.S. Highway 30/Idaho Route 50 corridor. “In 2020, we concluded a study of this intersection because it had a high crash rate before 2020,” Brumfield said. “This project you’re seeing right now is a direct representation of that study that was done. (Idaho Transportation Department)</figcaption></figure>Brumfield said that while the project is still in its early stages of planning, the open house allowed community members to provide valuable feedback. “The main feedback is the exact reason why we’re doing this project: it’s been the safety of that intersection and the crashes that have happened out there,” he said. “That’s exactly what we’re doing in the project; we’re trying to mitigate crashes going forward, trying to keep the public safe at an intersection we know has some danger issues to it.” Both design concepts also include widening the road and adding free-running, right-turn lanes to reduce the potential for collisions when entering the highway. The concepts differ in the placement of cul-de-sacs on closed roads to reduce points of entry. ITD said it aims to begin construction on a design by 2031.During the meeting, one person talked with Brumfield about the possibility of adding a roundabout instead of a stoplight. However, he said a roundabout would not be suitable for the intersection. “At this location, due to the volumes and the speeds, a roundabout is not the proper treatment for this intersection, just due to the speeds, the traffic volumes, the expected growth. A signal is much safer long-term, and a lot easier to maintain in the winter.” ITD will accept public comment online from Dec. 2 through Dec. 16 for those unable to attend in person.
