(WLUC) - The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians opened its Marquette Tribal Health Center on Monday.Prior to its opening, the closest center was in Munising.Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians Chairman Austin Lowes says the center will provide primary health care to tribal members. He says centers like this one are important as tribal members are disproportionately affected by health ailments.“So, the way that we combat that is with resources and those resources include health centers,” Lowes said. “So, one wasn’t in this area, there was nowhere for our members to receive those services which are a treaty right, so that’s one of the reasons why we invested the dollars that we spent on this facility.”The center is located at 1210 S Front St. in Marquette, across from Huron Mountain Bakery. Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians Vice-Chairman and Unit V Director Tyler LaPlaunt says the center opened for services Monday. The center will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Appointments can be scheduled by calling (906) 225-1616.LaPlaunt says because of treaty rights, tribal members will not be charged for services. If you do have insurance, he says providing that insurance will help support broader access to healthcare.“And then if they have insurance, they can present it, and any third-party revenue that we’re able to collect can go back into our Indian health services to improve or expand services across our counties and across our tribe,” LaPlaunt said. The center will provide primary care in addition to traditional medicine services. He says specialized care can also be arranged at the center.“If you use Indian health services as a Sault Tribe member, you can also be referred out to specialists and our tribe pays for that referred care as well,” LaPlaunt said. LaPlaunt says the center plans to eventually expand its services to provide dental and pharmacy care.</div></body>
