<div>LELAND, Miss. — Construction in Leland is still underway, even though the new Highway 82 bypass is open.Crews are connecting a frontage road to the bypass and resurfacing nearby stretches, making driving more difficult for motorists and businesses along the route.“The construction along the highway here in Leland has been a little unhandy, especially since we go back and forth to the bank,” said Alice Koehn, co-owner of Deer Creek Hardware. “But we know it’ll be worth it in the long run because we’re really pleased with the bypass.”Jamie Smith, branch manager at Planter’s Bank, said the project has already brought benefits.“We all love being able to get to Greenville quicker,” Smith said. “We’ve had some rough spots getting in and out, but it seems like it’s wrapping up and it’s really nice.”Business owners say the frequent traffic changes can be confusing, but the slowdown in local traffic has been offset by extra business from construction crews. As of Friday, the frontage road was closed heading east. Drivers can still reach businesses by taking backroads and exiting west on Old Highway 82 toward Greenville.Despite the disruption, many in Leland say the project has been more positive than expected.“We haven’t had any change in customers at all. We see our same customers and have gained some more, and we’re excited about the bypass,” Smith said.Koehn agreed, adding that the construction workers themselves have helped support local shops.“They’ve come into the store a lot here, did business with us, and all the employees have been very polite and easy to work with,” she said. With crews putting the final touches on the project, business owners say they’re looking forward to smoother, safer travel on Highway 82 — and more customers.</div>
