(WDAM) - The Mississippi Department of Transportation is in the process of making several improvements to Mississippi 15 in Laurel. The department said these changes will help keep drivers safer and make it easier navigating heavy traffic.“So, this project not only includes some resurfacing work, but also includes some traffic signal upgrades as well as some drainage improvements in the area,” said MDOT Public Information Officer Anna Ehrgott. The construction begins on Queen Street and extends north to Audubon Drive, stretching about four miles. Currently, crews are working on the mill-and-overlay phase of the project, which is being done primarily at night.“Then crews will move on to paving some of the driveways and tying in some of the local roads in the area,” said Ehrgott. We expect the asphalt work portion of the project to complete probably in the late fall of this year,”MDOT said the drainage structure improvements will be done during the day, but should have minimum traffic impacts.“There’s also some curve and gutter and some drainage work that’s going to be done in this area as well and that’s going to involve a bit of concrete work and drainage structure improvements,” she said. New signal lights are to be installed along that stretch as well.“The new signals will feature some upgraded detection equipment through both camera and radar and the way these new signals will work is they’ll actually be able to communicate with one another and that will have an end result of improving traffic flow in the area,” Ehrgott said.MDOT said it expects the entire project to wrap up sometime next spring.Want more WDAM 7 news in your inbox?
