Although the project was scheduled for completion in October, crews finished nearly two months early.Funded through a combination of federal, state and local resources, the $216 million project was praised for its swift execution.“It’s going to divert freight traffic away from the community and keep our citizens and businesses safe,” said Greenville Mayor Errick Simmons. He also noted that by reducing city-street congestion, the bypass will help goods move to market faster.U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Mississippi, added that the completion of this final stretch connects the Delta to other states, which he hopes will spur economic development.“There’s no reason why industry can’t come to the Delta now,” Thompson said. “We have a good highway, an airport at Greenville, a railroad and a river. So there are no excuses—and we have power.”Mississippi Central District Transportation Commissioner Willie Simmons emphasized that safety was a key motivator behind the project.“Now we have 18-wheelers with chemicals passing through residential and business areas. If there were an accident, it could be a tragedy,” he said.The bypass is expected to remove nearly 800 large trucks from city roads daily, improve safety and shave 15 to 20 minutes off travel times.“It’ll help me get to Alabama a little quicker,” Cornelius said. “That stretch bypasses a lot of twists and turns with a straightaway.”But the significance of the bypass extends beyond traffic improvements. The project is officially designated as the Anse Dees Memorial Highway, honoring Anselm “Anse” Joseph Dees (1920–2009), a distinguished Greenville attorney, World War II veteran and lifelong advocate for infrastructure improvement throughout the Delta. Dees served as chair of the Highway 82 improvement committee in the 1960s and played a key legislative role in establishing a 1,079-mile four-lane highway program across the state.Though he passed away in 2009, Dees’s efforts to connect Mississippi communities through better roads are being memorialized today in steel and asphalt. Leaders say the bypass may cut travel time—but it also lays the foundation for miles of new opportunity in the Delta.</div>
