(WTOK) - The Town of Marion is making some big moves when it comes to economic development.Last week, a private company began work on a 24-acre piece of property right off of Dale Drive. This project will possibly consist of residential and retail businesses looking to expand in east Mississippi. Marion Mayor says this journey of putting all of the pieces together and making sure everyone is ready has been long, but he is excited to see it through.“In order for any town or city to succeed, you got to have revenue coming in, and the only way you get that is by rooftops and creating sales tax and property tax base. And so that’s what we’re trying to do here. This is a business, you know, running this town as a business, and we’re and that’s what we’ve tried to do, and we’re trying to create new revenue for our town,” said Mayor Larry Gill. And many might think this work is being completed by the town, but this project is not costing the town or its residents a cent.“This is awesome because this is a private development. This cost to taxpayers in the town of Marion $0.00. I always tell people I, as the mayor, we don’t have to use taxpayer dollars all the time. It’s just about having the right people at the right at the right table at the right time,” said Gill. The mayor believes that within the next six to eight months, the land should be cleared and site work should be underway.</div></body>
