(KOTA) - Last May, KOTA Territory News shared the news of a partnership between Dream Design International and the City of Spearfish to provide quality and affordable housing in the community. Since then, a new developer has taken over, and many want to see how the project is faring under new guidance. In February of this year, the Spearfish City Council approved a property exchange and agreement to allow Hills View Homes, a subcontractor of Dream Design International, to become the new developer of Sky Ridge.Hills View Homes President Tanner Quinn says despite concerns about delays due to a new contractor taking over and recent tariffs, construction is on schedule.“A lot of companies, a lot of manufacturers that held off on increasing prices for a long time after COVID ... got to a point where they couldn’t. So we saw a lot of that come in at the beginning of 25′, and now with the tariffs, it’s kind of doubling down on that. In the last couple of weeks, we have been informed by national suppliers that they are taking stuff up due to tariffs,” Quinn said.Quinn’s main concern is keeping the houses affordable. While the market and building costs continue to fluctuate, he is confident houses in the development will remain affordable.“This is a huge help to be able to do that, and it’s so exciting because we have people who never thought they’d own a home or first-time buyers that have been kind of priced out of the market. Even graduates with good paying jobs still can’t afford between the interest rates and the cost of living,” Quinn said.Quinn says the City of Spearfish does own an additional 40 acres he is hoping will be put to use in the coming years to continue combating the need for affordable housing in the northern hills.
