(KFYR) - For nearly 25 years, crafters have met at the Heritage Center in Bismarck for their annual meeting on National Quilting Day— whether that’s quilting, sewing or something else. However, quite a few of those projects are far more special than they might look. Jenny Yearous has been quilting for nearly 40 years, and the project that first got her into it wasn’t even hers. When her grandmother died, she left behind an unfinished project: “Aunt Jen’s Stamp Quilt.”“It’s still not a finished project, but I just enjoyed it so much that I’ve just been working on quilting ever since,” Jenny said. The quilt Jenny is currently making started out as a friend’s project, but when she died, Jenny set out to finish it. She said aside from making her feel a little closer to the quilts' creators, it’s a way for her to express herself.“Some people like to garden. Some people repair old cars or whatever. This is my relaxation, it’s an artistic expression, as I said. It’s just fun,” Jenny said.Cec Reetz is also working on something special. Her daughter makes custom pens, and Cec wants to give them some handcrafted homes. She said it reminds her of the happy memories she’s shared with both her daughter and her own mother.“Many memories, yeah. My mom taught me everything I know about sewing,” Cec said. When she retired from working as a nurse, it took on a new meaning for her.“I had to find a new purpose in life, and this is it. I try to keep people warm with what I make,” Cec said. She likes to donate or give away her projects when she’s finished them, either to non-profits or friends and family. She said it’s not so different from nursing.“Act of kindness, that’s what I like to think,” Cec said. For both Cec and Jenny, these quilts hold the threads connecting their makers to the people they cherish most. Some of the guild members' quilts will be on display at the Heritage Center until March 17. Members said they’re more than happy to show newcomers a thing or two about quilting.</div></body>
