But now, fresh fruits and veggies may appear less because the USDA is cancelling a program that allowed mostly small farms to supply pantries and schools with fresh produce.“I think we were all kind of gob-smacked,” said Bill Olmsted, the chairman of the Lakeland Pantry.Lakeland Pantry in Minocqua is one such pantry that will be affected by the program being cut. For this pantry, fruits and vegetables are the most popular.“We expect the impact to be substantial as the pantry is in the middle of doing a customer survey and one of the questions we ask is; ‘is there any food produce that the pantry can add that would be a benefit to you?’ And hands down, the biggest thing we see is fresh fruits and vegetables,” said Olmsted.Now, pantries will have to find new alternatives to get fresh produce. Many farms are also going to lose contracts with the government, limiting their ability to network and sell products. Farmer Ryan Sullivan will miss being able to support his community in Manitowoc.“It was really a best case scenario and our products from the farm were getting to local food pantries within the first 24 hours of harvesting. So, all the vegetable produce that was going in were fresh within one day,” said Sullivan.Lakeland Pantry will continue to have fresh fruits and vegetables when it can. An appeal is being made for state funding for the program.“We can source all kinds of food relatively easily but our biggest problem is sourcing fresh nutritious food for our customers,” said Olmsted.</div></body>
