She said Rench was concerned when warmer temperatures brought rain on Wednesday night. The incident happened Thursday morning during a crew change, Goozen said, when five people were on an ATV crossing the river when it went through the ice.One of the survivors — who was a close friend of Rench’s — told Goozen the back half of the ATV went through the ice and while they tried to save Rench and the other man, they were unable to get them out of the water before they were swept away.

Skye Rench, a former Iron Dog participant, is missing after he and four others broke through the ice while on an ATV. (Heidi Goozen)

On Friday, friends visited the home that Goozen shared with Rench, bringing flowers and condolences. The pair planned to marry this summer. Goozen, who is a nurse, said she is just starting to process her grief. “I think working in the hospital, I’m somewhat familiar with death in a way, but I’ve never experienced loved ones dying,” she said. “So this is definitely going to be a process.” Rench grew up in the Mat-Su and loved to be outdoors — hunting and riding ATVs, but most of all snowmachines. Goozen said Rench and his friend Kevin recently accomplished a lifelong dream by racing in the “The World’s Longest, Toughest Snowmobile Race.”“When they were young, they said they always wanted to race the Iron Dog, and this year, they finally made it happen,” Goozen said. “It was quite the journey because the race course was not the best this year, but they finished, and they did not come in last.”Skye Rench has two younger siblings, according to his mother Stacey Calder, who now lives in Michigan. She said the family would be flying back to Alaska over the next two days.Original story:Two people are missing after the ATV they occupied broke through the ice of the Susitna River on Thursday morning, according to Alaska State Troopers.Troopers are actively searching by air for the last known location of the two missing people.Troopers say three others on the same ATV managed to reach shore, walk to a work camp and get picked up by helicopter.
